My name is Aisha Al-Sadie and I live in Edinburgh in Scotland.
Spirituality is a powerful aspect of every person’s existence; over the centuries its role in an individual’s life however small, affects billions all over the world. My short existence has been greatly influenced by my Muslim father and Christian mother; this has formed a deep and complex outlook on faith which has gone through periods of anger, revelation and peace.
Although these faiths have always been a part of my life, as I have grown older I have become even more involved in the topic. I have never felt compelled to belong to one set religion and yet discussing religion has always been something that has interested me. I am thankful that I am allowed to ask these questions. I have always thirsted for knowledge and as I have grown older this thirst has increased as I have brought my questions to a wider audience which has in turn has created more discussion.
Nothing about the afterlife or religion is certain; I believe we should keep an open mind and enrich our lives through discussion. There is no final answer and whatever conclusion I come to I cannot exclude the possibility of being proved wrong, even about my perception of reality, but I find this exciting.
With this attitude I explore religious symbolism and how people react to certain spiritual symbols in different contexts and situations in my work.
I am influenced by Gothic, Renaissance, Pre Raphaelite and Art Novae styles. I listen to Classical music, Death, Thrash and Black metal which have influenced my personality and therefore my work.
My aim is to draw the viewer into the piece to consider what the artist is trying to communicate through the placement of objects and symbols. If the viewer sees a deeper meaning in the piece they would derive an intentional religious suggestion which would hopefully make them consider their own spirituality.
My work is not a final thought, definite answer or opinion. My work can be a question, the visualisation of a spiritual journey or a milestone which by no means progresses towards any definite answer but conveys a specific spiritual influence or thought in time.
